It’s that time of year again, where we wrap things up, tie a neat little bow around 2015 and start to think about the fresh year ahead.
I love the energy of the New Year; it’s that feeling of opportunity, potential and a revived determination in the air. But before we jump head first into the ‘what’s next’, it’s also important to take a moment to reflect and take stock of the year that was.
Just about everyone I speak with seems to have had a MASSIVE year. There must have been something in the stars, or the water, or this year’s El Nino cycle, but 2015 was a biggy!
Lots of change. Lots of movement. Lots of digging deeper, ‘a-ha’ moments and awakenings.
So in the spirit of reflection and appreciation for what we’ve achieved/ accomplished/ survived this year, here is my little end of year wrap-up.
For me; 2015 has been a year of two halves. The first half was all about embracing change, realising dreams and leaping in.
We left our home of nine years in Sydney, leaving the hustle and bustle of city life behind; Pete changed jobs and I left the corporate world, my high intensity job and the cushy, secured paycheque.
We made a sea change, moved out of our gorgeous shoebox apartment into a giant (well, giant compared to what we’re used to – anywhere you can get far enough away from each other to not hear the other person on the toilet is a mansion to me!) ‘renovators delight’ and started saying things like ‘maybe we should put some sea salt on the box hedges’.
And then to top it all off, after dreaming of working for myself ‘at some point’ I got a little nudge in the right direction and threw myself off the corporate cliff into the heart filling, soul shining, shit-your-pants-scary rollercoaster of entrepreneurship.
Friends warned me. Articles I’d read talked about it. But nothing really prepared me for the wild ride of running my own business.
If I had to sum up the first few months of this year in one word I think it would have to be ‘tumultuous’.
The second half of this year as been all about grounding, integration, coming home and finding our new rhythm.
I’ve deepened my meditation practice, prioritised time on the mat and redefined what ‘self care’ means to me (more softness, more space, less striving and a good dose of trashy TV with a glass of red wine on occasion.)
I’ve worked harder than I ever have before, I’ve celebrated tiny but pivotal milestones, I’ve pushed myself to the point of crumbling, I’ve hated it, I’ve loved it, I’ve questioned why I ever left Sydney, I’ve diagnosed myself as batshit crazy for ever thinking I could do this, and I’ve known with every fibre of my being that this is exactly what I’m supposed to be doing.
I’ve learnt so much about myself; some of the lessons have been tough, and as confronting as a fluorescent light first thing in the morning, but all of them have been valuable, and all of them have made me stronger as a business woman and as a person.
It’s been huge. It’s been exciting. It’s been totally mental and I’m totally ready for it to be over :P
2015 you’ve been awesome. 2016 – bring it, I’m ready for you.
How did 2015 roll for you? What were your wins, lessons and challenges? Share them here, or maybe just take some time to write them out and acknowledge yourself with grace and gratitude for all that you’ve done this year.
